A two-front fight seems to be crystallizing over the Box Elder County data center — at the state and at the county. A two-front fight seems to be crystallizing over the Box Elder County data center — at the state and at the county.
Hundreds demonstrated outside the Utah Capitol on Thursday with now familiar grievances over water, power, and dramatic change. Then, the rally went inside. Dozens crowded outside the Governor's Office with a letter of opposition, said to be signed by thousands. No one answered the door, so Deeda Seed, an organizer, taped a small sign, which was quickly removed by a UHP trooper.
Seed expressed surprise that no one was available to receive the letter, though shadows of individuals were visible through the glass. In moments, an aide emerged to accept the correspondence. 2News asked rally-goer Mya Karbasi if the project is a source of anger, frustration, or disappointment.
Meanwhile, in Box Elder County, a group that started with just a handful of people and may now number in the thousands, is urging two referenda to overturn the county commission’s approvals.
“We have people from across the board, from MAGA to Marxists,” said Brenna Williams, a grandmother and retired economist who now speaks for Box Elder Accountability Referendum, or BEAR. “I’m not anti-development either,” she said. “It just needs to be in the right place. “ Supporters of the data center, including Shark Tank host and business mogul Kevin O’Leary, have insisted “misinformation” surrounds the project.
For one thing, Joel Ferry, director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, said the center would have a “net zero” impact on the Great Salt Lake — maintaining it would only be able to use 1,900-acre feet of water now allocated for ranching each year.25 million bees saved by firefighters after semi-truck breaks down in Parleys Canyon Roughly 25 million bees are safe and sound after a semi-truck broke down in Parleys Canyon on Tuesday.
