Brexit ministers say a fresh public ballot is not their policy, despite the chancellor claiming it 'deserves' to be considered.
Ministers are at odds over a second EU referendum as Chancellor Philip Hammond was accused of going"rogue" by repeating his claim a new public vote is"a perfectly credible proposition".
With the House of Commons still deadlocked over how to proceed with the UK's departure from the EU, or whether at all, Mr Hammond suggested a fresh national ballot on Brexit"deserves" to be considered by MPs. However, Brexit minister Robin Walker told the Commons on Thursday that a second EU referendum is not government policy and warned it would"create further uncertainty and further division".His fellow Brexit minister Kwasi Kwarteng also confirmed government policy is to"honour the referendum in 2016", adding:"This issue of a second referendum, frankly, I think is a red herring.
Mr Kwarteng was answering a question in the House of Commons from the DUP's Brexit spokesman Sammy Wilson, who raised the chancellor's comments.
